Six spritely siblings & one Grandma

Late last year a super delicious local cafe, In A Pickle, began a tradition of giving a full Christmas lunch to two deserving families. They asked customers if they knew a family for whom this would make a difference. The owners were overwhelmed by the response, along with the generosity of so many others who donated things to go with the hampers. I thought it was such a beautiful idea and was eager to contribute.

I emailed Esther at In A Pickle and suggested that maybe two families would like a photo session, disc of photos and a framed print. I figured this is something a lot of people don’t often get around to organising and for many it is a luxury they cannot afford. A great Christmas gift; Esther agreed.

So here we are… Kate has custody of her six grandchildren, ranging in age from 2-13. She dedicates her life to them. After talking to Kate on the phone she was just so incredibly grateful and appreciative of everybody’s kindness that she was lost for words. It was hard for me to keep my own emotions in check. Kate could now have Christmas day off and enjoy it with her family. We arranged to meet up in the new year so I could photograph all her grandchildren and since then have decided to print a photo book to compile more of the images than just one in a frame.

Kate told me the kids adored trampolining. When I arrived on a hot, humid, sunny Sunday afternoon in February the kids were keen to show me their skills (on two trampolines nonetheless!), but not before introducing me to their pets. They have a guinea pig, a cat, a kitten and a dog. The animals were as charming as the kids, and with six energetic youngsters I’m sure there is rarely a dull moment in their home.

To say that Kate is doing an amazing job of raising her six grandchildren would be an understatement. But that is love for you.
